1. General photography textbooks
- Mitchell, E. N. 1984. Photographic science.
This book is written by a physicist who made significant research
on the mechanism of latent image formation. The book is organized as
an undergraduate physics or chemistry fun course textbook, but this
book is also of a great value for photographers with physics or chemistry
background. The book covers from camera, optics, sensitized material, chemical
process to lighting techniques.

engineering. Society of Photographic Sciences and Engineers, published
by John Wiley & Sons.

probably the briefest yet most updated general photography book in
single bound, and I consult this book the most.)

4. Emulsion Chemistry
For beginning emulsion hobbists, papers by Carroll (1931) and Hill
(1966) are recommended because they are relatively accessible and
still accurate. References such as Baker (1948) and Wall (1929)
should be viewed as historical and used with great caution since
obsolete information and scientific inaccuracies are found.
For general emulsion chemistry, Duffin (1966) and Zelikman and Levi
(1964) are good textbooks. Mueller (1977), James (1986), Sturmer and
Marchetti (1989), Wey (1981), and Eachus and Olm (1989) are
recommended review papers.
Carroll, Hubbard and Kretschman is a book, which collects early
publication on the topic by those authors. Information contained in
the paper are old compared to the latest literature, but they are
still useful in some situations.
Books and book chapters listed in the previous section, such as
Keller, Locker, Carroll et al., and James are also excellent
general reference on this topic.
